Public Intimacies
Public Intimacies brings together analogue photographs and essayistic texts developed by Pia Eikaas over a period of ten years across Europe, Brazil, China, and the United States. Moving through landscapes, urban spaces, traces, and fragments, Eikaas explores the entanglements of place, memory, history, and the body. Working through a queer-feminist lens, the book attends to marginal narratives and unresolved histories, insisting on slowness, intimacy, and incompleteness rather than monumentality or totalising narratives. At a time when images are increasingly produced and consumed at speed, Eikaas approaches analogue photography as a form of slower thinking. Working with a medium-format camera, photography becomes less a means of documentation than a reflective and searching practice—an encounter with places and histories that remain open to uncertainty, longing, and projection. The photographs form a fragmentary visual archive of something that has been, or might have been.
